80s: Startbahn 18 West
Edit
In the early 80s, the building of the Startbahn 18 West created one of the biggest ecological movements of all time. A barrack village in the forest was meeting point for many protests.
The struggle ended with a very tragic event 1986. Two policement got shot, likely by protesters. It was always a hard struggle with much police violence, but even the radical part of the movement rejected actions that harm the life of anyone. Many see this event as the end of the movement.
Late 90s till today: New runway
Edit

Added by HannoThe new runway nord-west was planned in the late 90s. Although after the Startbahn West struggle, many politicians promised that no tree should fall again in this forest, this promise has been broken many times until today. About 50 initiatives protest against the new extension [1].
In 2008, protesters startet a camp in the forest of Kelsterbach, at the place where the new runway should be built. The camp is still there. Supporters are always welcome [2].
