Content DevelopmentEdit

Here are the content areas we think should be covered on this wiki.. Please feel free to add sections and propose how much to focus on different areas. The Green space is huge and while one day Green Wiki hopes to cover all of it, we must start somewhere :). I would also welcome feedback about the best sources for this information.

Question: I have material (listed under Long Island Energy right now, but soon to be distributed around) on several topics that don't fit neatly into the existing categories.
  • Green Business-Sustainable Business Practices -this is a clear category
  • Green Building- falls under the sustainable living subcategory House- but also have info on Greening Schools, municipalities, and businesses- this may also include sustainable code.
  • Green Building may deserve it's own tab instead of falling under sustainable living. It is a huge category that includes commercial, governmental and residential buildings. As building contributes to almost 40% of GHG emissions, its solutions are urgent and vast. Technologies, products, innovation and municipal and federal building codes are advancing at a rapid rate for building responsibly in the US.
  • Green Transportation issues, alternatives and technology
  • Education on the environment and/or energy (related to green building for schools)
  • Reducing municipal emission (our www.coolcities.us campaign, among other things) Combination of issues here too.
I'd love some advice on how to organize distribute this material Cassabel 16:54, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Because the wiki is still young there will probably be lots of messy categories, which is totally OK! I recommend just focus on writing lots of good content and we can figure out the categories later. That said, I think almost everything you mentioned above could fall into a large parent category "Sustainable Practices". angies@Wikia (talk) 17:20, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
I would like to see information on Green Jobs and Careers; there is not much information online and the world NEEDS them.

Act LocallyEdit

What about a section for regional environmental issues (could be organized by wiki's state/county/town- see Wikipedia Geography for framework we can use). For example- an entry on a specific superfund site, or what materials a town recycles and doesn't- entries in this section would link internally to Sustainable Living, The Green Movement,Legislation and Politics, and Green Science, and externally to other wikis etc. It would provide a resource collection site for community activists on this. (sorry if I'm doing this whole thing wrong I'm a newbie). Cassabel 23:59, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Cassabel, I think that would be great. Please feel free to start one for your area! There are a couple of local-oriented articles now: one for Gainesville, and also a collection of farmers' markets. These are just small starting points and by all means could use expansion and interlinks like you suggested. You can see both of these on the green wiki home page under Act Local on the right-hand side. Mollyh 00:26, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
A question of wiki protocol- Are Farmers Markets a subcategory of Act Locally, AND Act Locally a subcategory of Farmers Markets? Or does that create some kind of wiki-paradox? Cassabel
Hi Cassabel, nice to see you back on the wiki! You can do it that way, but kind of makes for a circular navigation experience. I would suggest making keeping Go Local as the parent category, and Farm Markets as the a sub-category. I went ahead and removed Go local as as sub category of Farm Markets. angies@Wikia (talk) 16:28, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Sustainable LivingEdit

  • Eating
  • Shopping
  • Driving/Autos
  • House (green design)
  • Traveling (eco-travel)
  • Vacationing
  • Home products (cosmetics, fabrics, toys, etc)
  • Recycling
  • Solar
  • Gardening
  • Carbon offsets

On the subject of eco-travel I'd like to gather some knowledge on carbon offsetting flights; Whether this is of any use, how the schemes work, what the experts say etc. I know George Monbiot thinks carbon offsetting flights is pointless... Simon Robson 14:28, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

possible shared / overlapping agenda with Sustainable Community Action - a lot of the above and maybe some below might, on sca21, come under 'personal options' and / or 'Green Purchasing'.
Hi Phil, thanks for joining the discussion!Feel free to use interwiki links to point to these articles. angies@Wikia (talk) 21:39, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Some challenges, which if we can find a way round might help move things forward:

  • In what ways is it OK to mention specific products and services without going agianst Wikia terms of service (no advertising)? (eg for purposes of review?)
This is definitely going to be a developing discussion for this community. I would prefer not to make any hard and fast policy this early and see how people want to write about products. Wikia has several wikis that are dedicated to products or companies (video games, digital cameras, etc) so I don't think its against Wikia's terms of service to document products. angies@Wikia (talk) 21:39, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
Same thing here, I think we will have to just wait and see what/if the problem is. I hope this community grows large enough that enough unbiased voices will ensure that doesn't occur. angies@Wikia (talk) 21:39, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Is there a need to include something on the limitations of, or controversy surrounding 'green purchasing / sustainable consumption / ethical consumerism, etc Philralph @sca21 17:16, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Sure, feel free to start the article :) angies@Wikia (talk) 21:39, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

What say we break out and divide up "Green Building"? I'm specifically coming at this from the angle of somebody who's looking forward to becoming an owner/builder but there's such a paucity of solid "best practices" type information freely available. I'm seeing this potentially as a general "Green Building" section with subsections for new construction, retrofits and modifications. It's not all so terribly complicated but it hasn't, to my knowledge, been brought together in one place before. Urzl 03:37, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

The Green MovementEdit

  • Non Profit Organizations
  • Activists
  • Events
  • Propose adding here green programs sponsored by local governments - allows users to identify "green" cities/localities and see in one place the actions, municipal regulations, statistics, etc that make that place green. So an article on Portland, OR as an example detailing that City's work towards encouraging bike and transit use, green design, and other activities. Links from this page would then link to articles on local issues, regulations, events, organizations, etc. Localities have much of this information.
I had envisioned this sort of thing in the get local section- i.e. what is your town doing. However, it would be even better to have those actions compiled in this green movement section, with links to the individual programs in the get local category! Cassabel 17:53, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Greenhouse Gas InventoriesEdit

I would like to create a section with links to various local and national greenhouse gas inventories. It would also point people at the specific ways of calculating emissions so that they could start their own local inventories or learn to influence future community developments, eg land use or transportation decisions. I keep having conversations with various people and organizations about who does what, and I'd like to create a public space where this information can be maintained and shared.

See the Carbon emissions article for some content that I've added. I would like to be as specific as necessary, discussing, for example, what various fields in various national databases mean and so on, and since this wikia is declared to be consumer-friendly, I figured I'd check here first. There are lots of organizations that collect such information, but it's usually siloed. There is a mailing list (http://www.ghgnetwork.org/) with a web archive, but it's not nearly as usable as wiki. Let me know what you think.

(See my blog for an example of things I'm working on.)

Hi, Simonf, Looks excellent topic / content. I think it'd be great to have this, either here or (if anyone has a problem with that) over at Sustainable Community Action wiki Philralph @sca21 08:18, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, Philralph! I'll stay here for now and will move some content to SCA if someone thinks it's necessary. Is there a substantial difference between the two? --Simonf 12:26, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
That's great, as long as it's in one of the two. I'm still puzzling out your question myself. SCA had been going for 3 plus years when wikia invested (including seemingly quite a bit of staff time) in setting up this alternative or additional option. If they thought SCA has been getting it wrong somehow, they didn't seem to want to tell us how, and so far haven't seemed very willing to talk with us much at all. There may be some good 'wisdom of crowds' type reason why it's being done this (seemingly less connected) way but I must admit to struggling to see it fully as yet Philralph @sca21 18:53, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Public Domain ContentEdit

The following are list of sites who's content is in the public domain and can be used by green.wikia.

Ekopedia and others... Edit

I arrive and actually I do like most of the people create a new subject without being sure that there are none already talking about this... I am part of Ekopedia. It is a participative encyclopedia about alternative techniques... It started in French but it is now developing in many others languages...

Check Ekopedia

We earlier tryed to have a collaboration with Tiptheplanet... It did not work out... Pity so much dubble information...

Check TipThePlanet

On their Website I now discover Appropedia seems to be the same also...

Check Appropedia

I have to had this student initiative...

Check Demotech

So I feel a little bit sad to see so much person motivated but not working together... If you feel like talking about and trying to create synergie... mail me at olivier(a)kaospilots(dot)nl

Thank you

CapitalizationEdit

Should articles be capitalized like Nuclear Power? If this is so, should the title be referenced within the article using normal grammar? --Dragonclaws(talk) 02:06, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

WikiNode Edit

This page set up to help with any interwiki collaboration Green wikia may become interested in. It'd be good to have a link to this from the sidebar - a good place is at the end of the community listing/headings. If Green wikia genuinely aspires to become 'central' then talking with potential allies has to be a part of this doesn't it? Philralph @sca21 10:10, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi Phil I totally agree that we need to start working more collaboratively with sca21. I am having trouble though understanding the wikinode project? Is it a ways of creating a hub to organize all the sustainability released wikis across the web? Please let me know the best way to support this effort. angies@Wikia (talk) 19:03, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Hi Angies, the WikiNode is more a beginning to help with possible future collaboration, a sort of list of who's out there. So for example I noticed a list of other wiki and other sites in lh col when signed out. I've added these to the wikinode, which of course focuses on wiki (other sites set up Green or sustainability rss feeds for). If there are other eg any listed on the sca wikinode you can just copy details across (didn't add renew energy as looks inactive). I tend to regard any that start editing and ask about collaborating as being collaborators. (Each wiki's wikinode contains a list that that wiki thinks appropriate for them eg sca and green wiki nodes don't necessarily have to be the same). Jimbo Wales dropped by recently to sca and talked about links and other stuff. Although its not essential it would be good if anyone from green wiki that sees stuff that perhaps ought to be on sca or at least linked to there, felt free to add at least some links. As part of ideas for Interwiki collaboration month I'm thinking of suggesting / starting some sort of table as to who tends to do what eg whilst sca covers all areas we perhaps have more on the uk than anyone else, whereas green might tend to get more on the USA (?), Ekopedia (French version) perhaps best starting place for French content, etc.

On 1 August 2008 (above) a suggestion or request was made for a link to a WikiNode in the sidebar. Am I correct in thinking only admins can do this? It look as if neither of the two admins, nor any of the 5 staff have replied.

Do you agree with having a link to a WikiNode in the Sidebar?

The poll was created at 09:24 on October 20, 2008, and so far 3 people voted.

Why should it be necessary to set up a poll for something so relatively simple? Is it just me or is the lack of a link to special pages in the sidebar not as open and transparent as things ought to be? Philralph @sca21 09:26, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Public Launch and New Logo and DesignEdit

Hi Everyone, Wanted to let you guys know that tomorrow we are publicaly launching Wikia Green to the press. Jimmy has been doing interviews all day with outlets such as Tree Hugger, Grist, Cnet and Wired who will be posting stories tomorrow to go along with our release. I will publish the release here on the wiki tomorrow morning. We are hoping this added press attention brings in lots of new contributors who are excited to get to work! Please take extra care to welcome new contributors and show them the ropes. We are very exited by the progress this small community has made and are excited to spread the word!

You also might have noticed we gave Wikia Green a facelift this week. The creator of some great logos and skins for some of Wikia's largest wiki sites such as ffxi.wikia.com, and marvel.wikia.com, took a crack at building one for Wikia Green. I definitely think it gives the wiki more of a personality. Would love to hear any feedback you guys have! angies@Wikia (talk) 02:13, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Guidelines for Posting About Your Green Business, Product, or ServiceEdit

Hi there - A lot of regular contributors on this wiki own green businesses or sell green products and services and bring their welcome knowledge and insights to the articles here. However some also use the wiki as a way to more or less advertise themselves. While I personally love to learn about new stuff in the green space, I'd like to suggest the following guidelines to keep the quality of articles a top priority over personal promotion. Comments and suggestions are welcome! Mollyh 21:07, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

  1. Post to an appropriate page. The Green productspage is a compendium of green products and services, and is an appropriate place to post a brief summary. You may also want to describe product/service/business in more detail on your user page.
  2. Describe why your product/service/business is green using your best judgment. This is a green community, and people are very sensitive to greenwashing.
  3. Do not post personal contact information such as your email address in an article. It is fine to add this to your user page if you choose to do so, but this is considered inappropriate in an article itself.
  4. Do not categorize your user page so that it will show up on category pages for Environmental Issues, Organic Gardening, etc.
  5. Showcase your knowledge. The best way to gain trust is to create relevant content that adds value to the green wiki.
  6. If you are posting content that you wrote for your business's website, be sure to indicate the original location of the content and that you are posting it with permission if it is copyrighted content.
  7. Finally, if you would like to advertise to a targeted green audience, contact Advertising.

Site nameEdit

This always happens in a lot of wikis. What exactly is the name of this wiki? In the logo and the main page, it says "Wikia Green". In most other places, however, it is called "Green Wiki", such as in the name of this page and at MediaWiki:Sitetitle. So...what is it called? →ΑΧΧΟΝΝfire 00:28, August 27, 2010 (UTC)

Energy Security - Approaches of India and China... Edit

How are India and China going to manage their growing energy requirements as they economies grow at incredible speeds? Both countries will do many new things, but most likely each will follow different courses...

Both countries are likely to more eagerly court the oil producing countries, whether or not they like it. Both countries are likely to place higher emphasis on renewable energy. Beyond these two major approaches however, the specifics for each country could be quite different (here's a presentation that provides India's perspective on this]).

One can expect India to be a bit more sensitive to world opinion in this regard than China, and I guess that should not really surprise anyone.

What are your thoughts on how India and China's approaches to ensure their nations' energy security?

Offshore Wind – When Will It Reach Inflection Point? Edit

Whenever one reads about offshore wind, it always appears to be in the region of northern Europe. You hear of Scotland, sometimes UK, Denmark perhaps...but for all the limelight that offshore wind has succeeded in garnering in the past few years, its applicability and use appear to be only in a few regions. Unless offshore wind can be successful in larger countries such as China, USA and India, it is unlikely to have reached an inflection point?

Offshore wind is costlier that onshore wind. Here are some data:

"Offshore wind systems are costlier than their onshore counterparts, both in capital and operating costs. A summary of indicative cost data provided below is insightful.

Onshore
Investment of about $1.5 million per MW
Levelized cost of 6-7 cents per kWh
O&M – 1-3% of capital costs
May be built in smaller units

Offshore
Investment of $2.3 million per MW
Levelized cost of about 10-11 cents per kWh
Higher O&M – 40$ per kW and 0.7 cents per kWh variable
Large turbines and farms required"

Source: EAI Blog Post on Offshore Wind

Offshore wind is over 50% more costly in capex (actually I have seen figures much higher than 50%) and overall, the cost of electricity from offshore wind is almost twice that of onshore wind.

Given that the costs are higher and its prevalence is currently is only in a few select regions in the world, when do you think offshore wind will reach a point from where it can take off at much higher adoption rates?

Original and Incremental Innovations in the Wind Industry Edit

Solar (especially solar PV) is the hot topic today in the cleantech domain today all over the world. Hardly a day goes by when you do not hear about the new, new invention that had taken place in the industry.

The wind industry has been relatively sedate. Listen to the comparison for solar PV and wind innovations from the EAI Blog here:

"In theory, wind farms have existed for over a hundred years, but they have been used to generate electricity only for the past about 40 years. For instance, the wind farm at Altamont is considered to be one of the oldest “modern” wind farms in the world – this was constructed in the early 70s. So that makes the wind power a 40-year old industry. That could qualify as a fairly mature industry.

If you consider solar PV, a quick reading of the industry will tell you that there have been dramatic cost reductions with innovations and improvements in technology. Since the early 1980s, capital costs for solar PV have fallen by about 90% – yes, the capital cost today just about 10% of what it was in the early 1980s. In the last couple of years alone, costs have fallen by over 30%.

Well, wind energy costs have fallen as well. In 2004, wind energy cost a fifth of what it did in the 1980s, and some expected that downward trend to continue as larger multi-megawatt turbines were mass-produced. However, the cost reduction in wind energy (per MW of power or per kWh of energy) has not been as regular and steady as it has been for solar PV, with some years in the period 2004-2007 actually experiencing significant cost increases, mainly owing to the shortage of wind turbine supplies.

OK, so most of us would readily admit that solar (both PV and CSP) have much higher chances of disruptive innovations down the line than does wind. This does not however imply that there are no major innovations or efforts to increase the efficiency of wind farms or to decrease the costs of components."

The author of the post goes on to say that there are indeed some innovations happening in the wind energy industry and also cites a few examples. But overall, there is little denying the fact that innovations in wind energy are growing at a much slower pace than are innovations in solar, geothermal, waste to energy, biomass power and ocean energy systems. Do you agree with me, and if yes, what do you think are the reasons for this? Is it simply because it is an old industry and fairly mature, thereby structurally less innovation prone? Or do you think the other renewable energy sectors have a different set of people with different DNAs working in them?

Analysis of Renewable Energy Opportunities for Indian Entrepreneurs Edit

If you are a businessman or entrepreneur keen on taking a dip into cleantech or renewable energy, it might be worth your time to do a month's research into the wode spectrum of opportunities that these fields offer rather than jump into the first opportunity you come across (which almost always will happen to be solar or wind power plants!)

Well, I say this because most people immediately think of solar energy when they think of renewable energy businesses. But solar may or may not be the best option for you. As this post on renewable energy business opportunities says:

"
Is solar PV the best business opportunity for you?

The short answer is: It depends on who you are/what your business is, and what you want to be.

The detailed answer follows.

First, it is easy to determine if solar PV is NOT for you.

Solar PV is NOT for you if:

  • You do not have access to considerable capital (i.e. in excess of 20 crores), AND/OR
    * You do not wish to operate in a long-term, fixed-return industry.

Similarly, it is also easy to determine if solar PV IS for you if all the following criteria are fulfilled:

  • You are keen on entering the power industry, AND
    * Your company DNA is compatible with operating in a utility service industry such as power, AND
    * If your group has access to (significant amount of) cheap capital, AND
    * If your business group has a background that increases your chances of getting a license for solar PV under the NVVN scheme

So, if you fall into one of the two above, the answer is fairly simple.
"

In most countries, solar power is indeed synonymous with feed in tariffs and long power purchase agreements, not exactly the kind of stuff you would love if you were an innovator. But the author of the post quoted above possibly should qualify his words in that these are applicable only for solar PV power plants...there are a number of other opportunities along the solar PV value chain that can do with a significant amount of innovation - right from polysilicon making to making wafers to making high-efficiency solar cells.

Anyway, the point indeed is that renewable energy is not just solar energy and there's heck a lot of other opportunities around - in manufacturing, in trading and in services, and for small businesses to huge conglomerates.

What is your take on the range of renewable energy opportunities? Are there any niche/unique opportunities that you are aware of/have come across?

Why not a National Jatropha Mission? Edit

Countries all over the world are providing bountiful incentives for solar power plants, especially solar PV based power plants. I am wondering why such generous incentives should not be provided to research in biofuels as well? I do not however see it happening in any country, expect to some extent, in the United States.

Well, one would have expected countries such as India that are highly reliant on other countries for almost all their oil would be keen on putting in significant investments into biofuels, but as this post suggests, they apparently are not:

"
Most power in India is produced by coal and hydroelectric power – both of which are available in plenty within India (yes, we import over 15% of our coal requirements, but we actually have reserves that will last us about 100 years at current levels of consumption). On the other hand, we have much less oil and import about 70% of our requirements (though it is nice to know that there have been some significant oil finds in the recent past by Cairn Energy and more recently by Reliance).

India uses about 3.2 million barrels per day of oil, and about 2 million barrels per day are imported. At $75 a barrel, that’s $150 million per day, or $4.5 billion per year, or over $50 billion per year. Our FDI every year is about $30 billion., which means our import bill on oil easily wipes out all the gains we made on FDI.

If our dependence on foreign countries is much higher for oil than for electricity, one would expect an equally high thrust to be provided by the government for the progress of biofuels as it is provided for renewable electricity. But I do not find an equal thrust.
"

I am from India and I can fully relate to what the author says. My country recently had the National Solar Mission in which the government plans to give hefty subsidy in the form of feed-in-tariffs to those putting up solar power plants. The government justifies such external incentives in the form of investment for the future. My question is, why cannot the government provide - through some form of subsidy - a similar incentive for research into jatropha? The current state of research in jatropha in countries such as India is laughable. Which is why I ask why there cannot be a National Jatropha Mission when there has been a National Solar Mission?

Can any of you share any experiences in your countries where the government has been more proactive in assisting biofuel research?

Will This be the Decade of Natural Gas? Edit

If Boone Pickens feels smug, he has reasons to. He had predicted a couple of years back that his country (USA) should rely more on natural gas than even on renewable energy fuels (though he took big bets on wind energy as well). And he should really feel vinidicated as world over, energy folks are waking up to the fact that this century could well belong to natural gas as the last one belonged to oil.

As this post about natural gas from the EAI Blog says, "I am being very conservative in wondering if this could be the decade of natural gas. There are folks who are wondering aloud if this could be the CENTURY of natural gas.

These folks are no doubt buoyed by the recent successes in shale gas exploration, but that alone is not the reason for natural gas being in the limelight. The properties of natural gas – more bang for the buck than oil as a transport fuel, and much lower CO2 emissions than coal as a feedstock for power – make it a preferred choice to oil or coal."...

The recent finds of shale gas in the US will only increase the acceleration towards natural gas, in my opinion. Add the fact that natural gas is less polluting than coal or oil, and you can see why lots of folks are genuinely interested in investing in this.

What are your views of natural gas and its projected dominance in the future?

Recycling, Reuse and Converrsion of Solid Waste, esp MSW Edit

Countries today generate humungous amounts of municipal solid waste. What are the best methods to recycle and reuse these waste? It is critical that these are indeed reused, because landfills are overflowing, and secondly it is such an incredibly stupid way to waste...waste!

How are our cities handling these waste (some details here on how Indian cities are handling MSW)? How better can they handle them? I am curious to know.

Somehow, I am convinced that waste to value (energy, fertilizers, new products etc) will create billion dollar entrepreneurs. I know it is not as easy as it looks, with challenges in segregation, logistics and conversion processes...

What are your thoughts on this topic?

Innovative Indian Zero Energy Truck – Looking for Solar Cell Sponsors Edit

Great ideas do not necessarily mean billion dollar budgets or a large corporation to be behind it. World over, in clean tech and renewable energy, small entrepreneurs and many amateurs are excited enough to try small, little efforts that could together make a big difference to the future of the world.

For instance, here's one such interesting small idea for awareness creation, the zero energy truck:

"Zero Energy Truck all across India. The idea behind the ZET is to showcase how the importance of green buildings – essentially the inside of the truck tries to simulate a net zero energy building, through the use of renewable and green energy sources.

Most parts of the ZET already has sponsors. Isabelle is looking for sponsors for the solar PV system to be installed for the truck. If your company is interested in being a sponsor and getting some green mileage, here’s how you contact Isabelle – isabelle@inspiredgreen.in

Some more details of ZET:

The concept - A Net Zero building which is energy efficient as well as generates all it’s power needs with PV panels on the rooftop – A Green Building par excellence. The growth of Green Building materials and products has been very encouraging, but awareness needs to improve within the design & construction community. Since most of the green building materials and strategies are different from conventional construction practices it needs efforts to educate people and make them realize that green practices can be incorporated in every building.
" (Source: EAI Blog)

Oh well, you might say that this is a cute but trivial idea and most times, I would be inclined to agree with you. But somewhere down, I feel that the awareness about clean technology and sustainability might be better created through such cute and somewhat "naive" ideas than through than by sophisticated looking gentlemen who present complex charts and data.

What do you think?

Educational and Career Opportunities in Renewable Energy Edit

If there is one segment that can take cleantech efforts into overdrive, that would be the students and youth segment. There is denying the fact that this segment brings in such an enormous amount of energy and creativity into any game that the game changes forever after their entry.

So, how indeed are opportunities opening up for students and youth in renewable energy? Equally importantly how should students go about their explorations in renewable energy (This post on the renewable energy career and educational opportunities in India might throw some light)? This is an important topic, one that deserves a lot of thinking...

It is heartening to see a number of colleges and universities worldwide have started offering courses in renewable energy and clean technology. But I am of the opinion that the availabiity of these courses alone will not prove disruptive; there should be an equal emphasis on creating an awareness for the students on clean technology and how clean technology can not only make a difference to the world but also to them personally as this is the technology of the future.

What are your thoughts on this?

Renewable Energy Where it is Needed Most - Islands and Other Remote Places Edit

For those of us living in cities, it might be difficult to imagine or envision how living in islands could be. It doesn't take a genius to figure out however that the costs of fossil energy in most islands and island like places could be steep, if those islands themselves do not have fossil fuel deposits.

I have never lived in an island, though I have been to small islands. It was hence interesting for me to explore whether renewable energy could find far greater acceptance in these places than in main lands. On digging a bit, I found one blog post which dwelt precisely on this subject, in the context of a small Indian island called Andaman and Nicobar.

The funny thing about many of these island appear to be that their reliance on diesel generators is far higher than the reliance on generators for mainland areas. Add to it the fact that diesel costs much more in islands (as most times they have to be transported from the mainland), and you see why power in some of these islands could cost as high as 50 US cents a unit (kWh), while in most places around the world it is around 10 cents!

Don't you think renewable energy sources (even at their relatively high prices) will find greater acceptance in these types of geographies than they will in urban areas where power is available most times and at less than 10 cents a kWh?

What are your thoughts?

wethepeople petition Edit

I do not comprehend why it is announced prior to its being ready; but, I am, here, submitting a request:

I, hereby, request assistance in creating a petition that above every fossil pipeline, as well as above every freeway, beginning with Interstate Ten, there would be photovoltaic panels & aerogenerators.
