On December 17, 2009, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service USFWS admitted that its efforts to save the Kootenai River White Sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus), North America's largest freshwater fish, were unlikely to succeed.
On August 8, 2008 the USFWS published a rule that designated approximately 18.3 river miles of the Kootenai River as critical habitat for the species. Press Release
