[edit] Natural History
[edit] Geology
- Long Island is a large sand spit created by glaciers of the (last?) ice age, and the rocks the glacier pushed all the way to its southernmost reach. Unlike Manhattan, Westchester NY and Fairfield CT counties across the Long Island Sound to the north, Long Island is not situated on bedrock, resulting in a permeable soil.
