[edit] In Your Town
Under Cool Cities volunteers are asking towns to pledge to reduce their carbon emissions and meet the standards of the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. The Climate Protection Agreement is like the Kyoto Protocol for US towns- municipalities pledge to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions 7% below 1990 levels by 2012. We also ask towns join ICLEI (International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives- an organization that assists with performing town wide energy audits and creating climate action plans), and to create and implement a climate action plan.

[edit] At School
With Renewable Schools, we promote renewable energy and efficiency in schools.
Renewable technologies such as solar power, wind,or geothermal eventually generate enough energy to pay for themselves. Energy efficiency upgrades such as insulating or replacing light bulbs reduce energy expenses, and like renewable energy can generate enough savings to pay for itself. By coupling energy efficiency upgrades which immediately yield energy savings with renewable energy installations that generate free energy, school districts can recoup the cost of the initial investments within 10-15 years.
However, often the initial investment can seem unmanageable, especially when school districts struggle to maintain basic services under a reasonable tax burden. Rebates and tax credits from Local Power Comanies and the federal government can help to overcome that barrier, but for school districts that are reluctant or unable to finance the upgrades, energy service companies can reduce the expense to ZERO. That’s right! School districts can upgrade to energy efficient equipment, install renewable energy, and not pay a penny! Schools can even make money!

[edit] Wind
Wind Resources Long Island has some of the best regional wind resources- explore your region on this NYSERDA supplied website [www.windexplorer.com| WindExplorer.com] Wind Farms
LIPA is exploring the possibility of a wind farm, with upto 100 turbines, 10 miles off the Rockaways after they scrapped their original Jones Beach proposal. While they partnered with Florida Power and Light for Jones Beach they are working with Con Edison this time around. If they can agree on a plan proposals can be expected in 2009. The energy capacity for the farm would be 300 megawatts. The cost is estimated at 1.5 billion and would be shared (as would the energy) by LIPA and ConEd.[1]
Winergy LLC is working on a $600-700 million plan for an 86 turbine wind farm with a peak output of 300 megawatts and a 167 turbine, 600 megawatt farm, both of which would be 15-18 miles south of LIPA's original Jones Beach proposal with the 86 turbine farm located to the east.[2]
