The Long Island Pine Barrens are a located in a large protected region on Long Island's east end. The ecology is sandy soil and gnarled pitch pine trees, occasionally with forests of scrub oak. It serves as the primary pristine recharge zone for Long Island's important sole source aquifers. http://pb.state.ny.us/
The pine barrens is protected under the Pine Barrens Protection Act, which prohibits development in the core of the pine barrens and restricts development in a surrounding compatible use area.
The Pine Barrens is managed by a state formed commission, and overseen by a number of councils, committees, as well as numerous non-profit organizations. The most publicly visible of these organization is the Pine Barrens Society Long Island Pine Barrens Society, directed by the vice-chair of the advisory committee Richard Amper.

According to the Pine Barrens Society, LaValle has since withdrawn his support to the amendment. The bill is in the rules committee of the senate.
