PETCO was recognized with an Environmental accolade for extended producer responsibility for the PET industry and awarded a Trophy for environmental responsibility / sustainability. The award declared PETCO to be an excellent example of a voluntary industry-driven initiative to help solve waste stream problems, fully meeting the requirements for a trophy to reward environmental responsibility and sustainability. The judges applauded PETCO for taking on extended producer responsibility and imposing accountability over the entire life cycle of PET packaging. PETCO natural and organic pet foods, and a wide assortment of environment-friendly pet care products, including pet toys, accessories, cat litter and cleaning supplies. In 2005, a settlement recovering costs of more than $2 million for the clean up of 1992 Michigan oil and gas wells once owned by ExxonMobil and Petco. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) sought recovery of the costs incurred to restore the sites after the wells were abandoned in 1997.
