Sustainability
Definition of Sustainability
Edit
There have been many attempts to define sustainability. Probably the most influential definition comes from the World Commission on Environment and Development held by the United Nations in 1983 which resulted in the Brundtland report in 1987. In this report sustainability is defined as following. Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising future generations' ability to meet their own.
Concept of Sustainability
Edit
Sustainable living provides that we (humanity) synchronize our consumption of natural resources with the earth's production. In other words using up natural resources at the same rate at which they are produced. For example, given a hypothetical forest of 100 trees is able to produce 10 new trees per year while 2 trees die per year, then it is hypothetically sustainable to harvest 8 trees per year with out affecting the forest for indefinite amount of time.
