History
Edit
Steve Kretzmann founded Oil Change International in 2005 in order to carry out strategic, systemic campaigns focused on the oil industry. It was one of the first organizations that focused solely on oil. The organization currently has a full-time staff of 7 with 2 interns and 4 affiliates. It has a specific partner, Oil Change USA, which focuses more on the US Government Oil Issues. The main office is in Washington, DC.
Focus
Edit
- The political influence of the oil industry over the government.
- The myth that oil brings affluence, especially to the Global South.
- Advocating for financing new forms of energy rather than rewarding companies for finding more oil
Campaigns
Edit
- Separate Oil and State [1]- a campaign to get oil money out of the US government. Oil Change has a tool on their website that allows you to view how much money Congressmen have received from oil companies.
- End Oil Aid [2]- addresses the myth that oil brings affluence to global south countries. Advocates for reducing oil subsides and educates on the issue.
- No War No Warming [3]- This campaign addressed the issue of global warming and United States war spending. Key Points: The United States spent more on war than the whole world did on renewable energy in 2006. Also, the war contributes carbon emissions that are equivalent to 25 million more cars on the roadway. This money could be used for finding renewable energy that would reduce emissions instead of increasing them.
